Simple Past Tense or Past Indefinite Tense

 

We use the simple past tense to describe an action that occurred in the past or at a specified time 

 

I bought a laptop last week

I saw a movie yesterday

 

We use the Simple Past to list a series of completed actions in the past

 

I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.

I  reached office , met with manager and started to work on our project

 

The Simple Past can be used with a duration which starts and stops in the past

 

I lived in London for 2 years

We waited for one hour

 

The Simple Past can also be used to describe a habit which stopped in the past.

 

I studied urdu when i was in pakistan

He worked at the restaurant after school

 

The Simple Past can also be used to describe past facts or generalizations which are no longer true

 

He was very naughty  in his childhood

He liked tomatoes before

 

 

 

 

 

Rules:        

 

Affirmative Sentences:-


 

If Subject is First Person (Plural Or Singular) ( I , We)

Sub + verb(2nd form of verb) + object

 I completed my work

 We ate pizza last night

 

If Subject is third Person (Plural Or Singular) (He,She,It,They)

Sub + verb (2nd form of verb) + object

He went to the market

They came back after one hour

 

Negative Sentences:-

 

If Subject is First Person (Plural Or Singular) ( I , We )

Sub + did not + verb (1st form of verb) + object

I did not go there

We did not eat anything  

 

If Subject is third Person (Plural Or Singular) (He,She,It,They)

Sub + did not + verb (1st form of verb) + object

He did not ask any question

She did not recognize me

 

 

Interrogative Sentence:-


If Subject is First Person (Plural Or Singular) ( I , We )

Did + sub + verb (1st form of verb) + object

Did I say anything?

Did we go there?

 

If Subject is third Person (Plural Or Singular) (He,She,It,They)

Did + sub + verb (1st form of verb) + object

Did he complete his work?

Did they come?
